Ask a Pro: How to fix air drafts?

Q: With the recent cool evenings and nights, we’re noticing a definite draft around our front door. What do you recommend?

A:  Exterior doors have two things to control the leakage of air.  Around the two sides and across the top there is weather stripping attached to the door jamb that is meant to firmly seat against the door.  Across the bottom of the door is a sweep that fills the gap between the bottom of the door and the threshold.  Both prevent air leakage, and both break down with age.  The weather stripping stays compressed over time and doesn’t seat as firmly.  Door sweeps also get worn and break down with age.

Both come in multiple colors and types, depending on door manufacturer, but all are meant to be replaced.  Take the old weather stripping and sweep with you when shopping and purchase an equivalent product for each.
