Fiberglass doors

Q: Irma was the final straw for our front door, it now needs to be replaced. It has a rotten jamb and the metal skin is rusting. What will hold up better than this?

A: Builder grade metal clad doors are economical, but your experience is common. The soft pine of the jamb breaks down, and pets and kids scratch the door and it begins to rust.

Fiberglass doors and jambs are a great alternative. They can be ordered smooth or embossed with a wood grain, making them look like a painted wood door. They can also be stained. Like stained wood, the finish will degrade over time and need to be redone, but the fiberglass below the finish will not rot. The jamb is also resistant to rot and is so hard we often must drill them during installation. This is your forever door.
