DIY Doors

What is a solution for rotten door jambs?

Q: I’m a realtor and one of the most common repairs we see on WDO reports are rotten door jambs, down low in corners.  Is there a solution for this?

A: These are builder grade pine door jambs, the same ‘off the shelf’ door at the home supply stores.  This is a common repair, we often replacing the door and jamb if the door has its own issues.

The ‘solution’ is that during replacement go with a fiberglass door and jamb.  Fiberglass won’t rot like wood, won’t rust like the metal-clad doors, and is really durable.  It will hold up well to kids, pets and other abuse.

Like any door, it will require maintenance in the way of caulking where trim meets the home, and a fresh coat of paint every 5-10 years, but this door will never rot and will last forever with proper care.
