Q&A - Accessibility Solutions

Q: My mom lives with us and uses a walker. Our one step up at the front door, and also when exiting through the garage, are difficult for her to manage with the walker without one of there to help. Are their solutions for this?

A: One step can be a mountain to somebody with a walker. As a solution, get online and lookup Threshold Ramps. These are designed to turn your step into a gradual slope. Measure the height of the step up and look for a ramp as long, in feet, as the step was high in inches. So, a 4” step needs a 4’ ramp. This gradual slope will allow for ease of access with a walker; or wheelchair should that eventually be needed. Some have an optional railing system, which is especially helpful on longer ramps used to get up/down a 2-4 step incline.
