What is a common problem with fireplaces?
Some of the most common problems that require a fireplace repair include:
- Issues with lighting the pilot light
- Too much creosote
- Chimney flue obstructions
- Chimney that’s too short
- Low heat
- Malfunctioning damper
- Cracks in the brick
All of these fireplace issues can be repaired, and you may even be able to handle some of them on your own if you have the proper tools and knowledge. For example, you can burn away accumulated creosote or install a chimney cap to keep birds from nesting and creating an obstruction.

Is it worth fixing an old fireplace?
To determine if it’s worth doing an old electric or gas fireplace repair or just replacing it, consider the cost of the necessary repairs, how old the fireplace is, and the extent of all the damage. If your fireplace experiences minor damage like a malfunctioning damper or a cracked door, you can fix these quickly and inexpensively.
Major problems like structural issues that need a professional contractor will be more expensive, so a replacement might make more sense. If you’re making frequent repairs and costs are adding up, replacing the fireplace might also be a better plan.
How many years does a fireplace last?
Most fireplaces should last between ten to thirty years, depending on how often you use them. If your fireplace is over fifteen years old, you should consider replacing it—especially if you have a prefab fireplace, which is likely thirty to forty years old by now.
If you’re replacing your fireplace, consider installing a masonry fireplace. These can last as long as your house is still standing.
What are panels inside a fireplace called?
When doing a gas or electric fireplace repair, you’ll encounter different panels inside your fireplace, including:
- Refractory panels
- Interior panels
- Fireplace liners
A refractor panel, usually made of brick, is designed to reflect the heat of the fire into your living area to warm it up and protect the firebox from the high heat. These panels are made with heat-resistant materials to withstand even the hottest fire. Most fireplaces have four.
Fireplace liners add another layer of protection to your interior by creating a barrier against the intense heat, preventing any damage to your fireplace. They come in many materials, like steel, ceramic, and refractory brick, so you can select the one that meets your home’s aesthetic.
Interior panels also come in different options, including refractory cement or ceramic fiber. They line the inside of the fireplace to protect the firebox and create a stone or brick appearance. These panels can crack or wear down over time because of the constant heat exposure, so make sure you replace them when necessary.
Can you repair fireplace refractory panels?
Yes, they can be done during your gas or electric fireplace repair. If you notice any crack in one of your fireplace refractory panels, though, you’ll need to replace it rather than repair it, since, even when repaired, it can create a fire hazard in your home.
