Before we arrive, we ask that you order your tiles and have them at your property so that all our service technicians need to do is show up with the appropriate tools and supplies to get to work. 1. Remove existing tile. If applicable, we will start by shutting off the power and removing your outlet covers so that we can safely work around your electrical outlets. Then, we’ll spread a drop cloth across your counters and/or floors to protect their surface. To remove your existing backsplash, we will use a chisel to gently tap the space between the tiles and wall. We’ll do this as carefully as possible to avoid damaging your drywall, but if patching does need to be done, we will take the time to do this extra step before going on to the installation. 2. Nail backerboard to wall studs. Though an optional step, we encourage you to purchase backerboard to help protect your space from moisture, which is a concern for both bathroom and kitchen walls. To do this, we will need to remove a portion of drywall to ensure the backerboard is flush with the rest of your wall.
3. Plan tile backsplash arrangement. Laying the first row of tile across your counter, we’ll determine the optimal layout for your tile. Then, we’ll use a tile cutter to cut edge and corner pieces to the correct size.
4. Apply thinset mortar to wall. Your backsplash material will determine the best type of mortar to use, but typically, we’ll use thinset. After mixing this product to the optimal consistency, we will use a notched trowel to apply it to your wall.
5. Lay tiles against mortar. Next, we’ll use our training and experience to place tiles evenly against your wall. Tile spacers will be used to ensure they’re perfectly positioned. After all tiles have been placed, we’ll need to wait for the mortar to dry before adding grout. Cure times are dependent on the product used.
6. Apply grout to seams. Once the mortar is dry, we’ll remove all tile spacers and mix up your grout. To professionally apply this cement-like material, we’ll use a tool called a grout float. Then, with a damp sponge, we’ll smooth out the grout lines and wipe off any excess grout on your backsplash’s surface.
7. Apply caulking to joints. To finish off your Fairfield backsplash service, we’ll caulk the joints between your backsplash and cabinets, as well as your backsplash and counter. If you’d like to use a grout sealer, we can come back in a few weeks and apply this as well.
