How can I update my kitchen cabinets without replacing them?

Spruce Up Your Kitchen With New (Or Like New) Cabinets!

If you're interested in updating your kitchen, consider the options available for changing the look of your cabinets. If you have the time and the budget, you can replace them from top to bottom; if you're trying to save money or don't have a lot of time to have the work done, there are other ways to change the look of your cabinets.

1. Paint. If you like the style of your cabinets but think they look outdated, simply paint them. You can use different colors on the upper and lower sections, or paint all the cabinets one color and use a different color for the island. Semi-gloss enamel paint is best for cabinetry.

2. Install lighting under the upper cabinets. This can give the entire kitchen a warm and comfy glow. Try using energy-efficient LED tape for uplighting on top of cabinets that don't reach the soffit or ceiling, and consider LED task lighting fixtures to illuminate countertops. Dimmable task lighting is recommended so you can adjust the amount of light as desired.

3. Remove the cabinet doors. Converting your regular cabinets to open shelving will lighten up a closed-off kitchen. Fill the shelves with the items you use frequently and that look attractive when displayed. Another option is to add glass door inserts into the cabinet doors; you can choose from clear, etched, crackled, or patterned glass, and even chicken wire if you're aiming for a farmhouse look. Adding reusable adhesive backing on the back of the cabinets adds personality and color.

4. Add crown molding. Standard cabinetry becomes high-end with the simple addition of crown molding.

5. Switch out cabinet hardware. New cabinet knobs and drawer pulls can completely change the look of your kitchen. Choose from handcrafted glass, metal, and wood knobs in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and styles.
